If a firefighter is taking a poop at the station when the siren goes off, does the fire truck and the rest of the firemen just go without him?

He just gets up and goes.  He can wash himself on the way over.

What's up with the world of personalized online experiences these days?  Like when YouTube recommends videos, or Amazon/eBay recommends items you might like.

They don't seem to go any deeper than "Hey, a few days ago you were looking at X, we think you would like to look at X again!!!"

Same for anyone else?

it creeps me out...... i found out recently that some web sites like facebook & twitter use the little "like/tweet/whatever this article" widgets that are everywhere to track your browsing history across the web, & then use that info to "improve" their recommendations and ad targeting and stuff

Yep.  I opt to not implement those on sites I build.  Adds a buttload of HTTP requests and enables tracking without the users' knowledge.

I just block social buttons in my browser.  Visual clutter anyway.

I don't think I mind tracking my browsing history (though when I'm at their actual site, not via plugins on everyone's wordpresses) in order to make better recommendations.

But these aren't good recommendations, they're "go look at the exact same item/video/picture again!"
