Title: Are forums dying a global trend?

Are they a forlorn relic of the late 90s - mid 2000s?

What were they replaced with?  To be honest I wasn't paying attention.

Also I wonder if technically right now is the "late 2010s".  Yeesh.

I'm not sure, but Tinister threads projecting the death of forums may be a trend.

Social media I guess.  Facebook and reddit.  Imgur, even?  People seem to communicate more with images and awful gifs than words today.

Some traditional forums have been replaced with more modern software like Discourse.  Though I think more are transitioning to cloud-based live chat like Discord instead.

Personally I use Slack for more businessy live chat.

At least in the case of the HC, whenever we last had a meta discussion about its future.  Maybe during the move to the cutey zone.


Relevant: Is there a difference between a warning and a forewarning?  It seems like both words pretty much mean the same thing.

Do communities develop on facebook/reddit/etc?

/r/GameDeals (https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/), no.  It's too large at this point.

/r/GameDealsMeta (https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDealsMeta/) though is the right size for enabling a sense of community.  There's a certain culture that has emerged, and you're able to pretty quickly recognize common poster's names.  There's people I like and dislike.  I'd call it a community.

HCCon is when we all had going to meet up IRL to hang out and drank booze and going to play video games and terrorized the locals.  It's tentatively scheduled to have had occurred in 2013, mark your calendars.
