this is cute and im really digging it

i completely didnt notice the [sp]checkpoint feature[/sp] until after i got [sp]the red flower in golden city[/sp] but it's a really cool thing that im just gonna use constantly from now on. gotta take a break but im gonna jump back in later. thanks sylvie and hubol!!!

Post by: aimaina on March 16, 2018, 02:18:49 PM
thanx for the nice comment cait...... the existence of the checkpoint feature isnt a spoiler & its use is encouraged, but its a bit nonobvious unfortunately because you have to pay enough attention to the hud text to notice it and then experiment to figure out how it works
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: juner on March 16, 2018, 02:23:04 PM
an hour in and i think i'm about a third of the way through in terms of medallion shards & i got both (?) the actions! rly enjoying it! it also took me a short while to notice the checkpoint feature for some reason but it's a good inclusion

are either of you going to go to the babycastles installation? it sounds v cool
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on March 16, 2018, 02:29:56 PM
it would be cool but i dont think i want to travel to the america just to go to it.....

for those who dont know theres this video game art gallery thing (?) in new york called babycastles, and they are doing a showcase of games by glorious trainwrecks members next month, & JIGGLY ZONE was made for this showcase.....

There is a progress-stopping bug in the purple zone. After collecting the [sp]phantom blade[/sp] leaving the room or going to the main menu permanently opens the second and final chest in the same area without awarding the shard inside. Reproduced in both browser and windows versions.

damn that sucks im very sorry..... i think i know how to fix it tho and how to identify other similar bugs if they exist. ill get on it

wow ive been gone too long i didnt notice this
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on April 21, 2018, 10:14:48 PM
should be fixed - can you confirm that you can get the chest now? i also found out there was a similar issue in Golden City ~ Eastern Block. thanx very much for reporting this

if you happen to have a save file with both chests in the relevant areas collected, you can now get extra shards that dont do anything :honeydew:

Post by: Duker on April 21, 2018, 10:28:51 PM
Tested in browser version and yes it works! Thank you for the very quick fix :) .

Now I don't have to explain to a certain raocow how to avoid the bug heh, the game is in his list of things to play.

Post by: aimaina on April 21, 2018, 10:32:52 PM
yeah the JIGGLY ZONE production committee is very much looking forward to the raocow lp!! he has to play two metroidvanias and celeste first tho so its gonna be a while.....

wait you can suggestaroonie??
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on April 21, 2018, 11:08:05 PM
if you subscribe to raocows patreon there is a big thing every so often where all the patreon subscribers suggest and vote on some of the games he plays next. the latest vote just finished so it will be a long time before the next one

however JIGGLY ZONE wasnt in that vote, i just posted it on his forums & he picked it as one of his personal choices, probably because he has played games made by me & hubol in the past and wanted to check it out

Just googled "Jiggly zone" to try to find a download link, nuthin' more mysterious than that heh. Downloaded from glorioustrainwrecks but remembered seeing something that sounded forum-like in the results so came here to report the bug.

ah i didnt realize the cutey zone was high up in the googley results
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: Duker on April 25, 2018, 05:48:00 PM
Found another bug, though this one is fairly minor: If you reset and leave the room during the "opened a chest"-jingle, background music stops playing until you either open another chest or go to the main menu. Only affects speedrunners really lol.

Feels a bit awkward now to come here to just to report bugs but I don't really know any better means to do so.
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on April 25, 2018, 08:10:52 PM
oh can you gain control during the chest opening sequence by resetting? interesting

there are a few minor bugs i know about but dont feel like fixing, but maybe i will fix this one sometime..... if someone ever does a speedrun of this for some reason it would suck to have the music cutting out all the time

i have a twitter account @sylviefluff where you can report bugs if you have twitter, thats supposed to be the main way of contacting me.... this is just an old forum i hang out on that started in 2004 and is still alive somehow
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE

make it impossible to avoid the chest opening sequence so everyone hears my good jingle's.......

why does it run like complete ass in chrome.

i thought it was supposed to be like that but i downloaded the windows version and it's like triple the speed. is it chrome being awful or what
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on April 30, 2018, 03:37:39 PM
html5 games are generally harder to run smoothly than windows games, probably because they have to run on top of a whole ass web browser. the web version is pretty playable on my comp (and hubols i think) but if your comp is less good than ours it mite run badly
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: wilde32 on April 30, 2018, 04:15:38 PM
my compy isnt that bad. should be able to run browser games. but i dunno.
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on April 30, 2018, 04:41:28 PM
the thing is its not just a browser game, its a browser game written in game maker, so theres an extra layer of garbage
- the game maker code needs to be compiled to javascript. the result of this will generally be much less efficient than hand-written javascript
- then theres the usual garbage: the javascript needs to be interpreted by whatever language the browser is written in. this will be much less efficient than just having a program directly written in [whatever language the browser is written in] (note: i dont actually know how browsers run javascript but im assuming its like this)
- finally the browser is compiled to machine code
usually the more of these layers you have the shittier your program runs. the windows version of JIGGLY ZONE doesnt have the web browser layer, so its much faster

also i think flash games were generally much faster and smoother than html5 games currently are, for technical reasons i dont understand. so if you are thinking of flash when you say "browser games" thats another thing to consider

i guess its also possible JIGGLY ZONE is just not optimized very well but i already did a fair bit of optimization to get it playable in html5 on my machine. i dont know how else i could speed it up sorrey
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: hubol on April 30, 2018, 04:58:56 PM
flash ran better because you basically installed a whole virtual machine for it and flash code wasnt interpreted

i dont know anything about html5 games. it doesnt surprise me that it runs poorly on certain machines. it would probably be better if the 60FPS was faked e.g. 30 game logic steps per second with 60 fps and lerping positions to make smooth movement. but im pretty sure game maker doesnt allow that
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on April 30, 2018, 05:04:28 PM
i probably could have just made the whole thing run at 30fps. 30 looks fine to me honestly i dont know why gamers get up in arms about it
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: hubol on April 30, 2018, 05:06:25 PM
but sylvie 60 fps is at the top of the gameing pyramid :'(
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE

i think ocarina of time runs at like 20fps or something and people loved that shit.... . what happened

You have to push the hardware's to its limits

Indie games are not pushing the hardwares

Give me that sixty eff pee ess
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: aimaina on April 30, 2018, 05:15:10 PM
the JIGGLY ZONE graphics engine can render as many as five unique JIGGLERS on screen at a time.... hows that for pushing the limits?
Title: Re: JIGGLY ZONE
Post by: hubol on April 30, 2018, 05:20:08 PM
dont forget that the JIGGLERS are generated using AI cloud computing beaming datastreams right into game makers pipeline, allowing for a seamless procedurally-generated gameing experience

I haven't played it in a while but I remember the menu being really problematic and slow compared to the game itself.

I tested 30vs60 fps with Dark Souls 1 by toggling framerate using a mod.  The difference was really significant in how fluid the game felt.

By the way I tried JIGGLY ZONE the other day.  While it didn't grab me enough to finish (maybe too repetitive?) I thought it was neat to see a mingling of both of your design styles in there.  It felt like a chu game but looked and sounded like a hubs game.

The best way to describe it is something akin to an old 90's cartoon crossover episode.

thanks im glad you got something out of it even if u didnt finish.... i think the game is a bit repetitive yeha because of the level design style. me n hubs want to make more games togehter i think

hello cutey zoners :honeydew: JIGGLY ZONE: Game Of The Year Edition is in need of some playtesting..... love-game.net/JIGGLYZONE_GOTY.zip (http://love-game.net/JIGGLYZONE_GOTY.zip)

it has some level design changes to balance out the powerups better ([sp]gravity flipping[/sp] was nearly useless before) and to make the final area more climactic (but maybe its a little too hard now?)

it also adds a super hard "second quest" that only true JIGGLERS will be able to clear...... the method to unlock it is revealed if you beat the first quest & wait 10 seconds on the end screen or if u read this spoiler [sp]press ctrl+J on the title screen[/sp]

hmm maybe im just being overly impatient but people here domt seem too excited about the JIGGLY ZONE...... both now & when it was originally posted...... did everyone get bored before finishing like cook?

most of the feedback has been positive but maybe its kind of a hit or miss game & the people for whomst its a miss are too nice to say so......

makes me anxious about how the raocow lp is going to go.....

eh

it exists

I quit at the challenge for the uhhh
thing in the purple zone you need the gravity flip for

it just felt really like
not a lot of thought put into the level design, there was a lot of just noise of terrain or spikes and i didn't wanna try slipping through one-tile holes

it felt like cat planet but like, half asleep and depressed

interesting. i think the chaos of the environment and the flexibility of JIGGLER's moveset is what makes navigating the game fun for me. its playing with fundamentals of The Platformer Genre

as for being anxious about the raocow lp, the game is short enough that i think everything will be fine. the JIGGLERs and treasures and wack art are interesting enough

It's a weird game, but it's fun, and [sp]"I am pirate, skilled with sword, run away instead of toward"[/sp] is the best dialogue I've ever read.

I tried the second quest, but got stuck wandering around aimlessly with nothing but [sp]the gravity powerup[/sp]. Which is probably the biggest issue for me - without manually keeping track of door connections (which seems like just enough of a pain for me to not bother doing it), you can very easily spend lots of time not knowing where you haven't explored until you finally stumble upon it.

i was wondering if a map ala kirby games would maybe help with this?

another option is showing the connected room information when youre in front of a door
(https://cdn.pbrd.co/images/HqF8FnW.png)

pros:
less work to implement than a map
more readable than the kirby map

cons:
doesnt show where the doors in the other room lead to

on second thought, that wouldnt be all that helpful since you can just enter/exit the door to see that infomration lol............

the lack of level design in the level design is very intentional, the levs are all procgen garbage with some tweaks to make things harder/easier/possible/impossible depending on what the generator came up with

the game was inspired by this secret lev i made for cute jump where i basically just placed a ton of blocks and spikes arbitrarily. i spent a lot of time exploring it and trying to figure out which parts of the screen were actually reachable. i found it really interesting to do all these weird ass movements and jumps that would never arise in normal levels and i liked the puzzle-like feeling of trying to reach specific places, with no guidance from the shape and structure of the level

i guess some people like that and some just dont even find it remotely interesting. i hope raocow is one of the people who likes it

i think the random nature of the levels creates interesting situations like i said but theres also a sense of bland uniformity.... i have actually never really liked procgen level design for that very reason. i tried to put some human elements into it via the dialogue and chest placement to counteract the blandness but its probably not enough for some people

the second quest is probably a bust if even the legendary vgperson couldnt do it.... ill remove it i think. it was basically just me making up a challenge run for myself anyways

a map would be helpful but im not sure where in the game i would put it

I mean, I'm good at ridiculous platforming, but pretty bad at navigation without a map, so that's the only reason why. I also never beat Kirby and the Amazing Mirror because of this, and in general dislike exploration-based games without decent maps.

Also, for example, I tried to get down to the part of the water area where the upgrade was, but there was a part that seemed impossible with what I had. If it turned out there was a way to get through, however, I would probably never progress without a definitive way of knowing that was my only option left. So yeah, ideally I would just map it out, but I was lazy. I might try it again when I have some time.

ah that stumped me for a bit in testing actually lol.... [sp]there are two entrances to the pirate hideout, one of which requires gravity to reach[/sp]

love-game.net/JIGGLYZONE_GOTY.zip (http://love-game.net/JIGGLYZONE_GOTY.zip) im officially releasing this very soon i think, since the raocow lp is coming up. i changed a bunch of mostly small things since the last version. the biggest change is that the second quest now features ~all new dialogue~ wow! also the way you access 2Q is different (beat the first quest & click the JIGGLER that appears on the title screen. if you dont have a clear file just start a new game and hit ctrl+shift+M). also i removed the medal requirements to enter certain doors (one door in the first quest and three in the second quest) because after some discussions with hubol i decided it wasa bad idea. all in all i feel like i mostly just wasted my time by preparing this update since the changes dont significantly improve anything but theres a couple good bug fixes in there at least

I think it's because he's done a few of Hubol's games (Craz'd and 2) and this is one of those that's also a collaboration with The Creator Of Cat Planet.

good game, glad raocow decided to show it off so i could play it
figured i should post here instead of talkhaus considering i made an acc for some reason anyway

i decided to try the second quest since the real game was easy (though i missed one of the items? i thought i had gotten every room in cleanup) but i had a lot of trouble finding a way into the sea caverns. theres the door in train station but it's just barely impossible to reach and you also cant take the path to entrance at the right side of train station, and then graveyard entrance is very obviously impossible so you cant take that way...
theres also trial site though i forget which room in golden city leads there...

thanks for playing! i am pretty sure it is possible to get to the right side of train station in the second quest. iirc there is a silly jump or something that seems impossible if you actually jump, but you can just barely make it by simply walking off an edge. there is also an entrance to the right side of train station in JIGGLY town but that route is much longer, and not really worth it unless you want to try the challenge of getting as many medallion shards as possible with only the gravity powerup
