nice job! i thought it would be pretty hard for one person to find everything & i guess it was if you had to make your own map....

btw if you know where all the stuff is the game takes like 10-15 minutes to beat lol. i was very curious how long a blind playthrough would be so thanx 4 playing :honeydew:

thanks for playing & for the nice comments :watermelon: your map is very cute.....

seems so far like the game takes around [sp]2 hours[/sp] to complete, if anyone hasnt played yet & is wondering.....

the one-block-wide floor tunnels could maybe be made easier to fall into.... i like though that its hard to discover them by accident since you normally run right over them..... it might be hard to balance it so theyre easier to find when actively searching but still hard to find accidentally

i uploaded a new version with a bunch of minor changes, the main differences are:
- when you load the game you start from the last statue you saw, instead of always starting from the first screen
(you will start at the first screen when loading a save file from the previous version, but once you visit a screen with a statue, it should work after that)
- some exciting "Cheat Codes" are revealed when you complete the game.......

still need to do sound and music sometime but i dont feel like it yet..... maybe i can just leave it silent

Something you could try for sound is no music, only ambience. like chiptune ambience. I made a track in pxtone once that's just soft noise to simulate wind and some birds chirping, it ended up sounding pretty good. (if i was on pc i'd upload it)
The most musical it could get is continuous droning sounds, like a crystal-sounding chord in the [sp]reflective area[/sp] or a shephard tone in the [sp]endless rainbow pit[/sp].

i was thinking of using more relaxed/downbeat music than my usual stuff for this game..... "chiptune ambience" might be a good idea for at least some of the areas altho ive never really tried composing ambient tracks before

sweet map...... i generated a similar map but it includes heart locations and the fake walls are faded out, so its more spoilery..... not sure i wanna post it yet

thanx.... adding a map is kind of a tough call. vg and giik made their own maps and at least one of them seemed to really enjoy the process but i get that a lot of people dont like to bother with that..... and i think the game is rather hard to complete without a map because some of the secret passages are pretty obscure

there is a [sp]room that has a map on the wall[/sp] but it might be a bit hard to find, and i think it wouldnt help that much with positional awareness

The first map I charted was almost necessary to figure out what's where. But on the other hand being entirely lost feels like a huge part of the game. Very slowly figuring out how things are connected was fun, and having a map that fills out automatically or something like that would ruin the wanderlust

The thing is that it didn't feel like something I was obligated to explore. The only completion was the hearts, and not really acknowledging the rest of the game exists feels like you're discovering some cool secrets each time you find a new area

Actually related to that, the feeling of finding secrets in this is something i REALLY want to replicate in oceanfarm

aw im glad you liked the secrets..... i was kind of surprised at how mich mileage i was able to get out of just two mechanics for hiding things (fake walls + not being able to see past screen boundarys)

ive been trying for a while to think of better and less trial-and-errorey ways to hide secrets in 2d exploration games than fake/invisible/breakable etc. stuff but im starting to feel like all that stuff is fine? maybe the trial-and-error aspect is ok & should focus more on using that stuff effectively than trying to innovate. if i do think of a cool unique way to hide things tho i will definitely experiment with it in future games.....

personally i feel like a map is necessary for a good platformsplorey game. the idea is once i cant progress in the current path im going, i can teleport to somewhere else where there's a lot of empty squares nearby and start exploring new squares. people say metroidvanias are known for their backtracking, but a good metroidvania built in this way shouldn't have much backtracking.

aus does this quite well in my opinion, you can often choose multiple directions to go (up, down, left or right) though it can be quite difficult to see what i mean if you already know the layout like we do

hmm i have an idea for a mapping feature that would make it easier to find places you need to explore more thoroughly, without giving away very much about the overall world and its structure..... im thinking when you touch a statue, it can display a simple map of the 5x5 area around the statue (only showing the rooms/connections you have actually uncovered)

ill see if i can implement that tonite or tomorrow.....

i added the map thing from my previous post.... im not sure if its actually that useful since it gives you a fairly small amount of extra information but give it a shot and see if you can get farther.....

because the previous version of the game did not save which rooms you had visited, the map will be empty when you load your save from the previous version, so you will have to revisit areas to fill it up

i also added super mario odyssey style "you got a heart" messages so its very clear when you get a new heart, there are some hearts that are close to room boundarys, so before u might have been able to pick them up without noticing, but that shouldnt be a problem now.....

still havent started on music & sounds..... >_<

Did another playthrough, and the map seems like a good addition. At the very least, it can help you see what areas you should try exploring (i.e. if the map for that area doesn't look very full). [sp]And it probably works well with the hidden map for locating yourself, which was more annoying without it, though I didn't actually try that since I didn't really need to.[/sp]

that fealing when u dont know enough Music Theory to know how to change a song from major to minor key, or what major and minor keys even are, or if changing from major to minor would even actually produce the effect you want, so you just use the pxtone transpose tool to move every note in the song down by 3 units

i think thats a good strat for "single player" because it lets you hit the ball softer and slower and at a more horizontal trajectory..... for multiplayer i think its not as good of an idea because u want to hit the ball fast & at bouncy trajectorys to make it harder for the opponent to return. but i made this game in like a few hours so its probably not well balanced lol

those are pretty good!!

bloop.wav feels kinda messy and repetitive so i can see why you're iffy on it

You think you'll make it so swing.wav and swing-alt.wav play in tandem? so like, when you go from upper to lower town it'll change the volumes of the songs so it's a seamless transition

darkness.wav is good for the red castle. the dungeon is spooky with scary skulls so you could just have a creepy droning track for that

maybe have no music play in the screens in this red square? that initial period between breaking out of the first room and finding the heart counter was really neat and felt like i was cheating and going somewhere i shouldn't, especially since the first room looks like a dev room. having music in that little segment might dampen that feeling a little bit

i was going to try doing that thing with the swing songs, i think gm studio even has some special functionality for playing songs in sync or something that ive never messed with

im glad you liked the initial escape thing because thats the exact feeling i was going for..... i was planning to have the music start when you escape the first room, but maybe it could start when you reach the heart counter room

hey giik or anyone else have u ever use the "audio sync groups" feature in game maker? i cant get it to work..... i mean it plays the tracks in sync but i cannot seem to adjust the volume of anything which is kind of the whole point

im going to download gm studio 2 and see if its just a 1.4 bug......

oh..... the sync thing doesnt work in html5 (this isnt mentioned in the docs anywhere as far as i can tell but i get "function not supported" errors in the javascript console when i try to use audio sync groups in gms2)

so i cant have cool transitions between musics on the web probably......

i wonder if theres a way i can do the synchronization manually.....

if you have access to system time you can probably implement a shitty hack. it depends on how long it takes to start streaming the sound files too.

it turns out just playing the sounds alongside each other normally without using the stupid sync group thing works remarkably well..... it probably desyncs after enough loops or something but whatever :honeydew:

also i decided to go all out with the "use multiple versions of the same songs for different areas" thing to save effort.... castle/dungeon/ice use variants of darkness and grass/cave use variants of bloop

songs i still need to write.... mirror, witchy, stars, rainbow, heart

also need sfx but that shouldnt be hared......

i made two songs this morning and i was feeling good but then i found out chuchino died....

chuchino was a kitty who lived at my parents house..... when i was a kid after our first family cat died we got two more cats and i named one of them chuchino after a pikachu from the pokemon comics.... he was a very cuddly and sweet kitty

a picture would be cute but it would be hard to fit that somewhere i think.....

i was planning to mention chu & include a picture or two along with the twitter/gt post about it but it would also be really nice to have something permanently in the game.....

oh there's like a glitch where if you move to a screen with different music that fades in and then immediately go back, both of the tracks play at the volume they were at while fading out/in

it's like frame-perfect though so it's near impossible to do accidentally, you gotta like, intentionally scoot over one pixel before the screen transition and immediately double back so i wouldn't worry too much about

i like how the hearts have names now, makes it easier to say like which one you just got

i cant replicate this bug on windows so im pretty sure audio_sound_gain is just broken on html5 sigh

i mean its the kind of broken where theres probably some cheesy workaround but thats annoying.....

i think i found the cheesy workaround & implemented it....

i also added the chuchino tribute to the ending (and made some other minor changes to the ending so its less "jokey")

there are some secret full-size chus that arent used anywhere in the game files.....

it includes the level design change i made like 15 minutes ago (added an extra column of blocks to make it easier to escape the starting area.... i wanted it to be tricky but i didnt want people to give up there and someone did..... i think the long horizontal jump was a lil too precise)

im really proud of this sparkly kittey game.....

ahh [sp]the heart zone next to the grassy cave has some pretty tricky jumps and its pretty annoying to wait for the kitty to stop bouncing so u can retry. also the jump between screens there is pretty rough[/sp]

if u give up & wanna skip it you can [sp] press ctrl+shift+g to toggle ghost mode which lets you go thru walls & fly [/sp]

i would say that from like a game design perspective the jumping mechs are probably not """"fun"""" but i think ignoring those kind of conventions is what makes the game interesting and having an annyong hardcore platforming section based on them is part of it.

yeha i think the movement being super bouncy and floaty is important in some way that i have trouble articulating..... for me it evokes this wonderous feeling of being a magical sparkly kitty that i dont think would probably really be there if the kitty just controlled very tightly like smw mario or something....

getting rid of the bounceyness would make platforming sections less awkward but i think it would also change the emotional experience.....

i dont really know if having a super tight platforming challenge with these mechanics was a good idea or not though lol i think probably most people will find it annoying and a lot will give up on it..... but sometimes the annoying stuff in a game is the most memorable.... that was my reasoning sort of

Something I was wondering is if being able to hold Down to bounce less would make the parts that take actual platforming less annoying, but that's maybe not worth adding a button for.

hmm that would be easy to implement but i dont know how i would tutorialize it.... putting like some dumb text on the screen to explain it feels bad..... and if i make it a "secret technique" that kinda defeats the purpose

Super difficult areas are cool but making it a sort of hidden area off the beaten path would remove frustration for regular players.

maybe holding down would squish the kitty down a couple pixels and reduce its hitbox a bit as well as making it bounce a little less? horizontal movement would still be slippery and it wouldn't be a HUGE difference in bounciness

in super cat planet i made holding down do low jumps as well as sliding to a stop when on the ground, the low jumps were really useful but the ground sliding less so, it was more if you wanted to actually stop somewhere and not worry about the angel sliding into a spike at 0.1 pixels a frame

hmm the "ducking" is a pretty good idea in a lot of ways actually, it would make the low height jumps in the heart area easier too. i think i will add that sometime soon

not really, there is the bingo system i added where it counts the number of full lines you get on the heart tracker and that kinda gives you something else to aim for, but 100% hearts is the only way to trigger an "ending" type thing

hmm, a problem with ducking/squishing.....
- i made it a toggle because the default controls are arrow keys and it is hard to press up, down and a horizontal direction at the same time (and some keyboards might not even support that)
- but if its a toggle then there is like no reason not to be squished at all times....
maybe it could be on a timer, like you press squish then 1sec later you pop back up? but that feels kind of arbitrary and weird

ducking decreases your hitbox and would make low ceiling jumps easier..... actualy to me it seems like a weird thing to not allow

like in mario games you can duck jump i think its a pretty normal platformey thing. maybe its also normal to have jumping cancel ducking though. i think donkey kong country works that way but i cant remember

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  Disallow jumping and movement while ducking, but still allow it in mid-air.

Having a toggle seems kinda odd.  It'd be more "crouching" then.

Very Cute, Seems Good

It's kind of awkward how you crouch/uncrouch every time you warp between statues, though. I notice it's hardcoded as Down currently, but if both buttons are going to be set to Down by default, you should cancel the crouch toggle if you press both on the same frame.

maybe make it so like, make it a hold command, and while ducking you can't jump, but you can duck in midair?

also the reduced jump height makes this screen trivial

you can clear it with a full-height duck jump super easily, you don't even bump the thing

though the rest of the area is still pretty tough, i think it's a lot better now tbh

also that last jump is dastardly cause you'd think it'd be better with the duck jump, but the regular jump is better since it has a running start, on second thought this iteration of the duck jump is pretty dang good ignore my suggestion from earlier

also i love how it squeaks like a little squeaky toy, makes mashing down hilarious

more edit: you might want to disable ducking when you're in warping range of a statue since both of those happen at the same time

yeha i think i like the heart area better with squishing, some of the jumps are pretty much the same (maybe slightly easier if you do a midair squish to shrink your hitbox) but several of them have tricks that make them much more consistent & it feels less obnoxious to me that way

i uploaded a new (test) version with statue thing fixed :honeydew: i will probably make the change official later 2nite

i think ive finally managed to permanently preserve a version of one of my games with the texture page glitch that happens sometimes when switching between windows/html5 in gm studio love-game.net/sparkle-test (http://love-game.net/sparkle-test)

anyways the main url has squishy kitty now......  :honeydew:

i also added a little "title screen" that appears when you first reach the heart tracker room on a new game, which explains the controls (its kind of silly since you need to figure out movement and jumping controls to reach there anyways, but its mostly to inform you that squishing and the options menu exist)

someone did a speeds run.....

i think my best time in testing was over 10 mins so this is wr.... there are a number of mistakes tho so the time could go down a lot probably

the route is totally different from what i usually do.... i basically do two clean loops of the world that cover all the hearts, and this route kinda goes all over the place.... but my route was developed before statues were in the game so it probably doesnt use them very effectively. i should think more about the best route....

also the run uses the ctrl+shift+r return to last statue code, i think this should be speedrun legal since its just a less annoying way to get the same effect as quitting & reloading

i added "bingo speedrun modes" (toggled with ctrl+1 for 1x bingo, ctrl+2 for 2x bingo, etc. up to ctrl+0 for 10x bingo) which stop the timer as soon as you get a certain number of bongos.....

i can see two viable routes for 1x bingo (middle column and rightmost column) but i dont know which is faster..... i havent thought about any multi-bingo routes yet
