Video's game are good  :apple:

I meant to write up some short thoughts on some games i played last year in, last year, but here they are now

Crosscode - The first game i played last year and one of my faves. Excellent mechanics that work both in making a tight arcadey fast-paced combat system & clever puzzle design and interactions. The dungeons are dense, the bosses are neat, the sidequests are significant and unique, the music is wonderfully nostalgic, & the story and characters are really nice.

To the Top - Cute VR platformer that doesn't really care about realism but more the aesthetic of movement, bounding from support to support with the release of the triggers. Good time that i thought worked p well within the limitations of vr.

Baba is You - Excellent moments of eureka, my fave sort of videogame puzzle where you examine all the tools at your disposal and kinda reverse engineer a solution.

Beat Saber - It's Like Aerobeat Plus but without the bottle

Supraland - Really cool and often unexpected escalation of powers in a 3d metroidvania, with a wild sense of freedom as you reach the end of the game.

Eastshade - Chill game where you hike/bike around and make paintings for people. It really nailed the feeling you get when you wander off the beaten track and stumble across something cool or interesting or just a vaguely nice piece of grass that you might not have seen otherwise.

Outer Wilds - I loved this for a lot of the same reasons i've loved Myst and Obduction. Just going around learning things and having lil eureka moments as you put the pieces together is always satisfying, as is the sense of physicality in how you can traverse and bump up against the world. The simulation in play never ceases to be impressive and is a great use of a time loop.

DQB2 - Great sequel to a great game! The simulation of the other villagers and their needs isn't super in depth but is very compelling at making you want to design and improve your villages. Like putting the main quest on hold for four hours because you need to install more public toilets and maybe a full bathhouse would be nice. Malroth is the best.

Pupy World - Excellent explorey platformer! The updig and throw mechanics add a really fun and playful level of improvisation and it was fun to try and untangle the knot of deliveries to make to plan a speedrun.

Your Turn to Die - I'm a sucker for this style of visnovs and the like... The 'trial' segments are some of my faves in the genre. Despite not being as directly connected to anything previous like e.g. a danganronpa trial, they still manage to naturally tie into the previous events of the chapter, and hold a lot of intrigue and surprises. I'm looking forward to part 3, where i feel I might regret some of my previous choices.

AI: The Somnium Files - Naturally being a sucker for the aforementioned style of visnov, I played and really enjoyed Uchikoshi's new game. Date and Aiba have a v dumb and fun dynamic, and the way the story pans out is just as I've come to know and love. Thank you for the delicious soup.

Raging Loop - kinda bought on a whim because I read it was the Werewolf party game but as a visnov and I really wanted to know how that would actually work in an interesting fashion. Turns out werewolf with pre-existing character relationships, longer passage of time and real stakes works really well! The main character is great and really sharp, the structure of the novel lends itself to some really fun moments, and I really dug the general mood and story. Would recommend! It has also made me want to go back and finish Umineko.

Great recs juner.  I've had my eye on a few of these so it's good to see a second vote of confidence.

I also got into VR recently so I've been on the lookout for those titles.  Climbey has been a blast.  To the Top looks different but still very unique and interesting.
Title: Re: video gim 2 thousand and 020
Post by: juner on January 01, 2020, 01:38:47 PM
Climbey looks great, sadly not out on PSVR so I've not been able to play it. PSVR is a fun time but the limitations of always having to face the camera and have the controllers unobscured quickly becomes apparent.

Would like to get a Quest or something eventually, what other VR games would you recommend?

Cockpit games are really great.  Elite Dangerous is awesome in VR.  I'm not a huge sim racer but Assetto Corsa also seems to work really well.

I need to spend some more time with it but Skyrim VR seems like a good one so far.  Just close your eyes on the intro cart ride.

Tried Minecraft via the official Bedrock support and Vivecraft for the Java edition.  Both versions excel in different areas.  I think I prefer Vivecraft but it requires some additional setup.

I picked up In Death and Obduction but haven't given them a try yet.  Will have to report on them later.  Hellblade is also on the list.

Adr1ft and Redout made me a bit queasy.  Probably wouldn't recommend them.

I'm not too sure which of these titles supports PSVR.  I have a Samsung Odyssey+, which has similarly poor tracking but a pretty high resolution.  Quest would be a good option for hybrid gaming.  Go untethered for high-action stuff like Beatsaber, and switch over to tethered for something like Skyrim.  Though if you plan to do mostly PC VR, then a Rift S would be more comfortable to wear.

VR wise I still need to finish Moss, my fave VR game for sure as it's adorable af and feels rewarding to play

Me and Thomas just started playjng EDF 5 because it's EDF so it's really stupid but fun

I wish I played more of a variety but we just end up playing more habitual games, rarely have the motivation to play new games through. I also only have to get huffy with a game once these days before I never touch it again

Moss controls like ass on the Vive wands.  But that's the Vive's fault.

I saw you'd played a bunch of VR games on Steam, Tinny.  Any favorites?

I always thought the Vive was better in general than the other stuff available, are the controllers just kinda naff?
Title: Re: video gim 2 thousand and 020

It was threea million years ago, now the Index is king.  Or maybe not I honestly haven't paid attention to the PSVR/Facebook headsets.

As it stands the Vive wand only has two buttons and a big touch pad (per hand).  Hitting different quadrants on the touch pad does the different jump, attack, evade, etc actions.  It's super easy to have your thumb on the wrong side of the touchpad.

I saw you'd played a bunch of VR games on Steam, Tinny.  Any favorites?

So far my favorite is Beat Saber but my game backlog extends to my VR collection. >_0

Haven't tried them yet but yeah the Knuckles controllers are probably the best right now.

The backlog is an untamable beast.  Legends say the beast only grows in length as it ages, and can never truly be vanquished.

I just sold my Vive on the Facebook marketplace.

I should have checked if the Index was in stock first...

has anyone here actually played celeste and if so do you think it's worth getting for PC? it hasnt appealed to me thus far cuz ive already played a bunch of matt games, but i hear the atmosphere/story is pretty good so im a little curious now (mostly blind about it atm)

Haven't played it though.

Post by: dcco on February 07, 2020, 04:05:24 PM
i bought celeste - definitely a matt game but im bad at stopping so i ended up playing like 3 hrs im on the 4th level now. it's pretty fun i didnt know it had climbing though --> between dashing + jumping i usually die not because i mess up the timing but just because i pick the wrong action
Title: Re: video gim 2 thousand and 020
Post by: dcco on February 09, 2020, 02:31:51 AM
getting close to the end of celeste - it's kinda weird seeing how much matt's storytelling has evolved. it's cool though.

also it's pretty unbelievable to me how good speedrunners of this game are, and i further cant believe the best runner of the game uses a ps4 controller

I can.  The PS4 controller is perfection distilled.

I've been considering for a while to post here about games i played last year, just like juner posted
now it's the 48th of january so i think I'm going to post. i dont remember much of what i did last year because that was a year ago but i've been able to pick out some of the more significant games i've played

Super Hydorah - plus version of a game called Hydorah. it's a scrolling shooter. I played the original on the computer some years ago and got good enough to the point where i could consistently single-cc the game. now i suck at it. maybe i'm used to a keyboard and cant do scrolly shooty things on a switch joycon. ill have to try again at some point and see some more of the new levels that were added. would highly recommend the original game its free and its fun (link is to the super version a
https://www.locomalito.com/super_hydorah.php (https://www.locomalito.com/super_hydorah.php)

Memoirs of Magic - technically a gzdoom wad but its so elaborate i'd consider it to be separate. its an fps with a cute aesthetic. it has cute characters and it feels so good to run around and shoot things. it's very very hard.
https://strawberryoctii.itch.io/memoirs-of-magic (https://strawberryoctii.itch.io/memoirs-of-magic)

Sulphur Nimbus: Hel's Eilixer - i think sum1 made a post to announce this game's release. it is a 3d fly-y platformer-y game. the flying mechanics are realistic and very fleshed out. flying in this game feels very fun and fluid, as does the rest of the game.
https://oddwarg.itch.io/sulphur-nimbus-hels-elixir (https://oddwarg.itch.io/sulphur-nimbus-hels-elixir)

Pupy World - :3 very fun and cute and magical experience. it was an honor to be able to shove myself into betatesting
http://wolfpupy.com/pupyworld/ (http://wolfpupy.com/pupyworld/)

Mindustry - open ended sandbox tower defence type video game. automate the production of high level resources and defend your base from a continuous onslaught of enemies. it's quite fun to play. however, the community is kinda toxic! i'd advise against public multiplayer in this game. the game itself is very cool though. i made a mod for it, i think. the game constantly updates so i wonder if its json api has changed since, preventing it from working.
https://anuke.itch.io/mindustry (https://anuke.itch.io/mindustry)

Blacksea Odyssey - got this one on switch. i guess it's a roguelike? you play as a funny man riding on a space surfboard in space and you throw spears at giant space monsters and use a space harpoon to rip off their space body parts. it is very cool game but starting a run is a bit painful, since you always start off crazy weak and need to collect upgrades to have any hope of surviving later levels. after that, however, the game is very fun for play. i'd recommend getting not getting this on switch. probably pc or something because i cannot for the life of me aim spears and harpoons with a stick.

i played the paul hardcastle forest game and it was cute. i havent been keeping up with sylvie games unfortunately but i saw the name of paul hardcastle, the guy who did the famous bionicle song, which is a really good song, so i knew i had to play this game. i got to the level where you have 2 bananas and fall down a shaft before it ended... the song is really good as well as the game, so im thinking right now is the perfect time to really "get into" paul hardcastle

infinity train good cant wait for s3. amphibia's humor doesnt really land for me, i mostly watch it for its over-arching plot.

also i feel like you would enjoy watching she-ra, im only a bit in but it seems good, and i hear it's really queer later on
Title: Re: video gim 2 thousand and 020
Post by: cati on August 10, 2020, 11:15:26 PM
oh yeah she-ra's absolutely on my "watch it eventually" list, but i have a weird amount of trouble watching shows where all the episodes are already out unless it's a miniseries. like it's way easier for me to follow a show if i catch it when it's first starting, otherwise i end up watching too much at once, burning out and never going back. netflix et al's whole model is kryptonite to me.

guess i'll just have to force myself to stick to one episode a day or something.

does anyone remember that one indie game where all the graphics were boxes, and as you explored the level slowly zoomed out and revealed like a nuclear apocalypse or something?

also that one where you're a robot that can only jump and you progressively get the ability to jump, double jump, etc.

im trying to make a list of flash games to replay before flash die

edit: also that one where you just hold right and watch your character grow old and die

i'm pretty sure the last one is passage (http://passage.toolness.org/)

drawing a blank on the other two though. i think 1000 amps (https://store.steampowered.com/app/205690/1000_Amps/) technically fits the description for the second game but it's probably not the one you were thinking of.

shame they never released more of the co-op levels after adding the level select...

when i was still working at an games place arcade, one of the kids discovered the portal 2 level editor and so i kept being called over all day to playtest their level, that was fun

Which do you think will break first?  The last working PS4 or the last working NES?

I'd bet on lower complexity.  Fewer moving parts, fewer things to go wrong.

They'd probably both last a really long time without use.  Maybe the PS4's CMOS battery would die, but losing time probably still qualifies as "working".

Sure.  That and earlier renditions.  It was a bit cozier than current online communities.

One of my current favourite communities is actually Tildes.net (https://tildes.net/).  It's less pretentious than Hacker News and without all the dumbshits at reddit.  Seems like mostly good people.  I'm happy to send invites if anybody wants to join.

certainly i miss aspects of it. it was nice that it was active, and it had people who were really passionate about niche things. i used to really enjoy q's sense of humor and people's banter. it was exciting to post your work and see what people were working on, even though the status quo was to shit on everyone. obviously a lot of us were extremely toxic, and it strongly affected my psyche. i wish we were all nicer to each other, but still funny

We were pretty shitty to each other, weren't we?

Though I do miss dropping the odd ducko.

I feel like a bunch of us (myself esp.) caught the wave of "be shitty, sarcastic, and aloof and you'll be a cool funny dood" that communities like 4Chan and SomethingAwful had going

also young people doing the standard thing of trying to appear mature and witty, but misunderstanding and it comes out terribly

also feel bad for behaviour when MMG started and we went over to carry the bad behaviour over, Maddy was just trying to focus on building a positive community around their games :(

yeah it feels like a lot of us ignored the intent of the mmgf... it was just another place to be a huge asshole

I definitely ignored the intent of the forums, tbh I never liked any of Maddy's games, I just joined cos Badwaffles talked about the place a bunch so I wanted in on the action

Don't think it was as straightforward as it being a place to be an asshole, it was still generally a community. It was just a community where general edginess and toxicity were easy ways for people to fit in. That's fairly common (unfortunately) in online communities (and school friend groups too tbh). This sort of behaviour breeds itself if it isn't dealt with, which they did do with MMGF. I think that's why MMGF was much better at being on topic than this community was at that point.

To be fair to our earlier selves, we were mostly teenagers.  I think kids in general just haven't figured out their moral codes yet.  They're also under an immense amount of stress and social pressures.  So I do feel some regret, but I also kinda get it.

as somebody that really enjoyed maddy's games, im sad that the mmgf was discontinued, but when i think about it yeah we probably weren't at all the kind of community maddy was hoping to create. i kind of wish i could have seen what the community would have looked like if it had persisted into the towerfall / celeste era though. it feels like that kind of community in general doesn't exist anymore though. it feels like everything is reddit or discord now, formats which im not a big fan of.

also even though looking back we definitely were hecka toxic, i think at that age i just kinda assumed that was how the internet was for the most part. and i even appreciated it to an extent because i felt like people were "real" with each other (in a sense uhh maybe im wild for thinking that way), which i appreciated. even back in peak "ducko" years i feel like i learned a lot about my personality that hopefully i was able to learn from and change for the better.

anyway though overall i just miss having stuff to talk about with people i guess, even if it was just nonsense most of the time.
