Title: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022
Post by: Tinister on May 27, 2021, 04:17:52 AM
What was the first ever video game series to reach its fourth installment?

if arcade variants count, my guess would be at pac-man or similar

No way, Dragon Quest IV and Ultima IV both predate Mega Man IV.

i would not be surprised if there is something older than ultima (ultima iv released in 1985) but i cant think of anything.... old computer rpgs might be a good place to look. i thought maybe dragon slayer, but dragon slayer 4 was 1987. wizardry 4 was also 1987

oh this game from 1983 was apparently supposed to be the fourth zork game, but they changed their minds: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enchanter_(video_game)
that wiki page describes it as part of the "zork universe" though so maybe it counts

apparently metroid dread was a working concept for a sequel all the way back when metroid fusion came out, and metroid prime 3 even references "project dread" somewhere inside of it. i think it's cool that they're acutlaly making it.

If Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was called Metroidvania for ripping off the Metroid gameplay will Metroid Dread get called Metroident Evil for ripping off the Nemesis gameplay?

Note: I've played neither Nemesis nor Metroid Dread.

I got my 3DS set up with NES/SMS/MSX2/GB/TG16/TG16-CD/SNES/GEN/GG/GBA/Cave Story emulators.  I couldn't get MSX2's disk drive working though.

I think I like tinkering with software more than I like playing video games.

I have more fun modding games like Skyrim than actually playing them.  Something about the potential of it all is very satisfying.

In the end it's still just Skyrim, though.

I hear the Wii U makes for a great emulator machine once softmodded.  It also has a much larger virtual console library than the Switch does (currently).

i think the ys i map got expanded from the ys eternal release onwards, so it might be that?

just had a quick look and this looks like a p good guide for the turbografx version, nice handdrawn map aesthetic https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/TG16/Ys-BookI&II-Guide.pdf

Maybe.  If it requires booting to full Linux to run the emulators, that won't be as convenient as just using the native Steam launcher.  Might have to faff around with input drivers and such then too.

Did you preorder the thing?

Title: Re: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022
Post by: juner on August 13, 2021, 08:26:38 PM
do you have any particular games or styles of games in mind? there's quite a variety of stuff on itch made from all sortsa tools and engines

not sure it'd be what you're after exactly but there's tools like Bitsy for making short narrative experiences, and Puzzlescript for making puzzle games, if you don't want to use a full blown engine like gamemaker or unity or whatever.
good at abstracting away all the underlying workings and letting you focus on the more important aspects quickly
Title: Re: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022
Post by: cati on August 13, 2021, 09:01:08 PM
there's twine too, which is mainly used for choose your own adventure type games, but i'm pretty sure you can do enough scripting and styling to randomise elements or add rpg battle systems or whatever. and it'll integrate into other things like unity projects to handle dialogue systems.

i was using haxeflixel a while back for a few projects, and that seemed pretty good too for more general 2d stuff.
Title: Re: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022
Post by: dcco on August 14, 2021, 07:11:03 AM
i actually in general prefer more low-level game dev tools bc i like to have a lot of control over all the little parts of a game. that being said, i am open to learning an engine if the ability to be more specific about stuff is there.

i think probably i would use it for a platformer-ish thing, but idk i might want to do other rando 2d stuff.
Title: Re: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022
Post by: aimaina on August 14, 2021, 03:24:21 PM
i think general purpose game engines like gamemaker and unity give you more than enough control to implement whatever mechanics and little details you want. the "low level" stuff you have less control over would be internal engine aspects like "what order does the game loop process things in" and "how do rendering instructions get batched and sent to the gpu", but even if these internal things are implemented differently from how you like to do it, the engines are flexible enough at a higher level to let you make basically whatever kind of game you want
Title: Re: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022
Post by: SquareWheel on August 14, 2021, 05:49:24 PM
Godot may be a good contender because if there's something low-level you want to change, you have full access to the engine's source code.

I don't know if it's ready for "prime time" yet, but I've enjoyed its workflow more than GameMaker in the short time I've spent with it.  Node-based trees seem more intuitive for me than GM's pseudo-OOP design.

i'm in a small community where we make game engines for a certain community event

a fair few of us have transitioned from gms 1.4 to godot and i've heard very positive things about it. is it worth the switch? what are the main differences? as someone that's been using gm for 8 years or so, would i have an easy time learning it?

Post by: dcco on August 14, 2021, 11:09:49 PM
oh it did not occur to me that in modern day game maker has export to html5 lol. i think something like game maker is probably fine for my purposes, i might try out godot tho sounds interesting.
Title: Re: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022
Post by: SquareWheel on August 15, 2021, 02:01:13 AM
The biggest difference is Godot has no concept of rooms like in GameMaker.  Instead, everything is made up of nodes in a tree structure.  Nodes typically provide functionality, but can also be dummy nodes just to group things together (think <div> tags in HTML).

For example you might have a dummy node which represents the player.  It has some innate properties like a position, but doesn't do much else.  So you can attach a sprite node to give it a visual appearance.  Maybe add a sound node for handling player sound effects, and so on.

Collections of nodes can be saved as scenes.  You'd likely have a player scene, a scene for each enemy, one for the level layout, various menus, and so on.  They're inherently reusable assuming you don't build in too many dependencies.

What's neat about this approach is that any scene can be run by itself.  If you want to just work on the player, you can load them in by themselves.

There's some other cool features.  The editor itself is extensible, so you can write code which affects the editor.  For example a cannon could render its trajectory in the editor view for easier fine-tuning.  That's called a tool script.

There's probably still a bunch of missing features compared to more mature engines like Unity, but I'm really liking the direction of Godot.  It feels more intuitive to me than other game engines, and I really appreciate that it's fully open-source and encourages community contributions.

Post by: Tinister on August 21, 2021, 04:01:55 PM
I think I like tinkering with software more than I like playing video games.

I discovered that the Ys IV ROM for TurboGrafx-CD has not one, but two, English translation patches.

The first patch changes all the text to English.  That patcher was very specifically written for 32-bit Windows -- which I don't have here in 2022 -- so cue me setting up a virtual machine (after sourcing a Windows ISO, keys, etc.) just to copy ROM and patch files back and forth.

In the second patch, a ragtag bunch of vocalists offered their talents to dub the spoken parts.  However, this patch assumed a file format more raw than what I had, so cue me finding some cracked version of a virtual disc mounter so I could re-rip the ROM (with the first patch), apply the second patch, and re-format it back to the emulator-preferred format.

All of this took around a day and a half to figure out.  Now I have a fully translated ROM, just sitting on my 3DS, for me to play.  Any day now.  Yup...

I likewise have translated roms I intend to play, but probably won't ever.  Sorry Pokémon Card GB2.

Reminds me of modding Elder Scrolls.  Lots of enjoyment planning out mod synergies and interactions, but it always devolves into a half-completed stealth archer run anyway.

i'm on a very puzzle game kick at the min. very excited for Bean and Nothingness (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1706090/Bean_and_Nothingness/) which has a generous demo and sadly doesn't seem to have much presence/discussion that i've been able to find. but very solid mechanics and fun puzzles.

also enjoying Bonfire Peaks a lot as a cool 3d space puzzler - i love puzzle games where the moveset is incredibly stubborn. lots of fun mechanical consequences to explore.

nice, iji is one of my favorite games. replaying it with non-standard builds is hella fun.

also @ludosity yeha asha is playable in slap city, and i think they still make references to reallyjoel's dad. my dream is for iji to make it into NASB. and ye iji had a pretty major update recently (in a relative sense, i think maybe 2019) to the way pacifist run works.

also in vidya game news i played metroid dread and it's such a good game. i havent liked a game this much in a while. idk how much the cutey zone still cares for hard games / long metroidvanias but i really enjoyed the experience, gonna try to 100% it now.

Definitely gonna check it out if i see it for cheap (big if). Though i don't have any track record of finishing metroid games...

I think the last metrovan i played & finished was Hollow Knight. I missed a huge amount of hidden content but was p happy with my journey through the game so didn't really wanna go back and do cleanup duty. Thinking about my friend who plays through the souls games with a checklist for completion and that'd just be nightmare unfun for me... i like the idea of missing half the game and then replaying in 10 years and naturally bumping into new stuff.

Or maybe the last metrovan i played & finished was Monster Boy if that fits the genre expectations? That game owned, lots of good platforming and great music

ive also never finished a metroid game before. i was more motivated to finish dread though bc it's not like say super metroid where i basically already know everything about it already

ive had no interest in hollow knight, but ive heard a lot of good things about it, one of my friends siad it was the best game they ever played :U. i was interested in monster boy but it's sitting in my infinite backlog of games that i want to play but dont bc i never play video games anymore

Title: Re: Official Video Games Topic for the Year 2022

i guess when i said "long" i guess i didnt mean actually long i just meant something that wouldnt (causally) be beaten in a single sitting. that's how indiegames make me feel these days.

also i agree forums are sick. i wish i still had interests to find forums for and also that forums still existed

i had great times with zero mission and fusion when i was younger but for some reason i have no interest in playing dread.... i keep hearing good things about it though

tbh this is how i feel with a lot of games, so i feel. overall i dont even really play games that often anymore.

Not to sell or anything, just the exercise of putting dollars into crypto to pay minting fees.  It needs your money or it'll collapse.  🙁

I think so.  The gameplay has changed in later Souls games to be faster and reaction-based rather than technical and resource-based (ie. managing stamina and spacing).  But their overall design has remained consistently good.  FromSoft excels in level design, environmental storytelling, and really gameplay mechanics as a whole.

I've preordered maybe three games in my life, but this was one of them.

did anybody here ever play anodyne. i dont really have a strong opinion on the games quality (though the atmosphere/music can be nice) but there were a couple gags that seemed oddly tone breaking in terms of being datedly edgy or pop cultural and i found out it came out in 2013 and was a spawn of that timepoint in indie games and was like well that makes sense

It's been on my "will probably play eventually" list for about seven years.  Maybe one day I'll be between games and an indie Zelda-like will be just the ticket.  Though last time that happened I played Lenna's Inception instead.

Anodyne has a sequel now, if I'm not mistaken.

It's an international community and prices vary by region.  Discount percentages however are consistent 99% of the time which makes it useful to more people.  The price can be (and often is) included as additional information, though.

Dang Facebook is buying up the exclusives, and I don't much care to join their ecosystem even with Revive.

Weirdly VR mods are one of the best new prospects.  Risk of Rain 2 in VR is intense.  Mods are less polished than say Alyx or Walkabout Minigolf, but still a lot of fun.

it kinda hurts my ears, the sound effects are very loud and seem to have clipping issues
some of the filters are a bit overbearing, for example the green in stage 3
i think it would be better if the A/D keys would automatically move you up a block instead of using W, i end up mashing W when trying to move.
pretty cool gam though, i dont know how difficult it would be to add an undo last move button but that would be a nice qol change

yeah i implemented the gameplay exactly how it is on the calculator (which was limited by the fact that uhhhh it was on a calculator). i probably wont revisit this project for a while bc, but i did originally have an idea for a more complex block game (with more mechanics + online database) - if i ever get around to that i definitely will add some kind of undo + more intuitive controls.

mostly bc i kinda redid my whole active internet presence for a while, did streaming, before realizing that i did much prefer peace & quiet

ive been doing stuff in nim with vulkan for rendering but it proved So Messy that im going back to opengl... but still with a lot of customization. i feel it on 3d asset pain though. my blender ability is limited to a total of 5 hours spent on making a cursed animation

ideally i can get some engine whipped up for the game that ive finally whittled down into a workable small idea. ive tried godot even but just i want the control and flexibility that full control over the game code that going from gl gets me. plus i managed to get nim->shader macros working for both desktop and emscripten, so that's a huge plus. so nice to write glsl in the same language as the rest of the code and be able to target web and pc just by changing build target.

nim does have async! https://nim-lang.org/docs/asyncdispatch.html
for 2d stuff theres already a pretty good selection of stuff and 3d is getting there too.
one of the really nice things is you can use c/c++ libraries with like really light effort.

well, it's good seeing you :) - and yeah hope your personal stuff gets better.

it kinda sounds like you and i have a similar game dev approach lol. i also really like messing around with low-level / making my own engines. been learning typescript to get into web games, but im basically writing an entire language over it to wrap around everything so i dont actually have to write javascript lol.

nim seems like a cool language although im never a fan of actually doing manual memory management. also im always skeptical of using newer languages for game dev because i feel like their interactions with opengl are always poorly documented. sounds like nim is.... okay-ish?

Yeeeee, the source for this game is on github here - https://github.com/dcco/save_spark (https://github.com/dcco/save_spark) . To be honest, the abstraction is really just an entirely different language, which I compile into Javascript and then run using eval :U  The lexer is defined in oth_lite/_flex/ts.jacoblex and compiled using something called "jacoblex". The parse is defined in oth_lite/src/z/parse/parser.ts tho, and I think you can get a better feel for what the syntax is like by looking at the types there.

wmap.png was my jank way of avoiding having to actually find a level editor - all the level data in the game is read from that and emap.png + emap2.png . was definitely starting to run out of usable colors tho lmao.

i think maybe the only thing that bugged me was

That's pretty amazing. It looks like you're even lexing, parsing, and compiling it all in the browser too! Very, very neat.

I only know it from its recent Steam release (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1730680/Klonoa_Phantasy_Reverie_Series/).  I like these retro platformers appearing on Steam, like Ty the Tasmanian Tiger (https://store.steampowered.com/app/411960/TY_the_Tasmanian_Tiger/), or SpongeBob's Battle for Bikini Bottom (https://store.steampowered.com/app/969990/SpongeBob_SquarePants_Battle_for_Bikini_Bottom__Rehydrated/).

Also I don't have any nostalgia for it whatsoever, but even Glover (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1257880/Glover/) made its way over.

klonoa ps1 is probably my fave game ever :dancedog: will always recommend, very good 4-5h long platformer

haven't played moonlight museum but know it's a lot more puzzly like the klonoa GBA games which were pretty fun.

let us know what cool Wonderswan games you find, I've never really looked into the system

Is the remake (Phantasy Reverie Series) a worthy remake?

The WonderSwan flash cart market is the epitome of cottage industry.  Rarely in stock and janky as heck.

One of them cannibalizes official carts to make them, which feels weird from a preservation perspective.

I don't have one yet. =(

Yeah definitely, it's basically the same old klonoa 1 and 2 with new lick of paint, and not much else is particularly 'remade' about them outside of aesthetics. certainly the easiest way to play them these days.

I never really thought about the manufacture of more ubiquitous flashcarts and chips like for the DS etc, it'd be interesting to see the scale of the companies involved

some friends recommended corru.observer to me a few times and i finally played it...
it's incomplete right now but there's already so much that's made with so much love.

i think this is definitely like a full multimedia experience rather than what i might explicitly call a game. New Literature?
it was really engrossing and im still captivated by the story and world and characters and all of that...
the ideas are really fascinating and tie into a lot of things that are even existent today. it's amazing
& the art is just so incredible and powerful and suitable for the medium. it all comes together really splendidly.

Celeste is pretty good although gameplay is basically just more polished version of the other Maddy games. i think people are also really into the storyline and music.

I downloaded the Archthrones demo (https://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls3/mods/1765) for Dark Souls 3.  It's purdy good.

Also been playing a lot of Risk of Rain 2 lately.  Been slowly leveling up the Eclipse difficulty levels, which basically add a new challenge every time you get a successful win.  I played some more Risk 1 after the remaster came out too, but have basically finished with it now.

Am excited for the Elden Ring DLC.

ive kinda been thinking of picking up a DS/elden ring/from software game for the sole purpose of being able to say old Maddy Games™ are harder. maybe elden ring but not sure if my struggling laptop could really take it also am poor.

mostly sticking with platformers these days bc idk theyre still my jam. played a bit of celeste 64, and 3d metroidvania pseudo-regalia. and uhh maybe am looking into some other indie metroidvanias that came out. i got into running mario 64 tho and that's been eating up a lot of my time :U surely i get back into gaming soon tho  :lemon:

I finally played through Hollow Knight some months back and really enjoyed it.  Just a marvellous game.  I do enjoy metroidvanias but they can also be a bit of an investment sometimes, so I'm always a bit hesitant to start a new one.

I'm not sure if Maddy's older games are harder than Souls titles or not.  They're very precise and that would be difficult for a lot of people.  On the other hand, Souls games (at least the more recent ones) are more reaction-based, and that presents its own difficulties.  I think either could be difficult for people with low motor control, but both skills can also be improved through practice.

I've played so much of both that I really don't have that beginner's context necessary to evaluate it fairly anymore.

I played through Celeste 64 after finishing the C-Sides in the regular game.  I really liked the Mario Sunshine-esque stages.  Overall though I was content to put it down after the hour or two I spent with it.

I saw one of your SM64 runs on my Youtoobs.  I recognized some of the tricks, like the backwards bomb carrying.  It seems like a tricky but very fun game to learn speed tech on.

That was fun!  One of those keys was real mean.

The game reminded me a lot of Ittle Dew, since the paths you can take branch depending on the spells you unlock.  I finished in 49 minutes, though didn't get the true ending.  I have some guesses as to how that might be done, but I'd need to play around more.  I'm a little worried that I need to beat it deathless based on the ending message... but that's probably not going to happen.

Cool game!  I think it's real nifty that you're still releasing freeware projects after all these years, chuchu.
