I watched the pilot of Digimon.  One of the lines cracked me up.  After fighting a baddie the kids proclaims, "Wow, they made vaporware out of him!".

See, it was worth re-watching some 18 years later.

not watched much anime this season but i did go and see "Your Name" and "A Silent Voice" at the cinema. they were very good but A Silent Voice was rly hard to watch at times...

also wanted to watch the mbmbaminé but it seems nearly impossible to watch outside of america...

i have been watching a few cool korean tv shows recently. "The Genius" is basically Liar Game but as a reality show, and "Crime Scene" is a fun roleplayey murder-mystery show with kinda escape-the-room style ransacking of the crimescenes to find evidence

Some of the animation quality in Digimon is a bit questionable.

I forgot about the Elvis monkey baddie.  Never liked him.  But this line was pretty great:

"Well you say you want a Digivolution?"
Title: Re: animes

lol yeha that monkey sucks & hes like the main villain for a bunch of episodes..... he even comes back later after "dying"

I don't think I like season 2...  I don't know who these new people are and it scares me.

The first baddie is a 12 year old in a cape and shitty sunglasses.  I don't think I can do this.

God this Davis guy is the worst.

I can't imagine why they chose him as the protagonist.  The writer's seem to be aware of the fact that he's a complete dick and makes everybody else miserable.  Is this just an attempt at super drawn out character development?  sdfsjhfkjh

The best new character in season 2.

Soo, they defeated the bad guy by making him feel bad, and then he has a nervous breakdown and enters a fugue state.

This kid needs seriously psychological help.  He shouldn't be off gallivanting alone.
Title: Re: animes
Post by: SquareWheel on April 03, 2017, 08:32:47 AM
The thing I don't get is why the kids still need to hide the existence of Digimon from their parents?  This is only a few years after big ass dinosaur Digimon and shit attacked the real world, so it can't be that everybody has simply forgotten.  I could maybe get the new kids doing it, but the older kids were literally seen off by their parents as they flew into a giant magic beam of light that took them to the Digi-world.  Why are they hiding their Digimon now?

I dun geddit.

Also why has nobody pointed out the stark similarities between the dark gears and the dark rings/spirals?  Like not even in passing comment "ya know this is kinda familiar".
Title: Re: animes
Post by: SquareWheel on April 03, 2017, 08:40:15 AM
Also Davis still needs to fall into a volcano.  Dang guy tries to trick his Digimon into evolving, and it actually works out for him instead of doing the dark-evolution or whatever that mechanic was.

The only saving grace of him being the protagonist is that the other characters constantly give him shit, and that's worth some schadenfreude.

I will say, the music is infinitely better in season 2.  That bubblegum pop fight song they constantly played in season 1 worked wonders to destroy any tension in the moment.  At least in the English version.

yeah its weird..... maybe they dont want their parents 2 know that they are still digi-adventuring since its dangerous....

idk what the english version is like but the jp version of season 1 plays this cheesy song in pretty much every fight scene.... it kinda owns imo

What the heck is a Destiny Stone why has nobody mentioned the existence of these apparently incredibly important things until just now

They referred to this lady as "Arukenimon" for about 10 episodes before the "big reveal" that she was actually a digimon oh my god.

I'm gonna assume that one comes down to translation error.

nah i think thats how it went down in the jp version too.... i dont think the kids knew her name though so i guess its one of those things where the audience is supposed to know but the characters arent

I suppose so.  I don't really know what happened, I was just going to watch the first few episodes for nostalgia.  Tough to stop once you've started, though.

Wait what the heck just happened in the last 5 minutes of season 2?  They kill the bad guy and suddenly it's the future where everybody gets a Digimon and there's ambassadors and free travel between worlds and the broody guy gets the girl.  whaaat

I like season 3 better already.  The characters don't seem to be completely awful like season 2.

Except the merchandising is pretty darn blatant now.  CHECK OUT THESE SWIPE CARDS YOU CAN BUY

Noooo, Davis narrates all the outros.  Don't do this to me, Digimon.
Title: Re: animes

Netflix removed Digimon from streaming in the middle of me watching it.  Are you fucking kidding me?
Title: Re: animes
Post by: SquareWheel on April 15, 2017, 08:25:29 AM
And thus ends the Digimon journey.

Season 1: I liked the episodes that I actually remembered as a kid.  Some good nostalgia fuel.  More objectively, it was kinda slow and extremely formulaic.
Season 2: Every new character was awful.  Some of the old characters became more charming.  A ton of digivolution padding.  One episode I swear did the full evolution sequence for every single digimon in a row.  Took like 2-3 minutes.  The "dark ocean" stuff seemed interesting but didn't really go anywhere.
Season 3: Actually... kinda good.  Overall writing and animations improved, less padding.  The kids were more likable.  Feels like there's a bit more depth in there.  Can't help but feel the entire cards gimmick was a ploy to make me buy toys, though.

Also I'm very confused about the season 2 > 3 jump.  I think they just dropped the canon completely?  But they made it sound like the S3 teacher is grown up Kari, so I don't bloody know.

if by season 3 u mean digimon tamers, ive never watched that but i think its supposed to be kind of a standalone thing from the first two seasons? whereas season 2 is a direct sequel to season 1

theres a recent-ish series called "digimon adventure tri" which is a direct sequel to seasons 1 & 2 (focusing on the s1 characters) but i dont think its dubbed, and also its not even finished yet..... it has a weird release format where they release like 4-5 episodes at a time every few months, and theyve only released four "chunks" of episodes out of six total

I think so.  Netflix displayed them as different seasons in the same series, but it seemed pretty different compared to the first two.

I don't normally mind subtitles, but for me this is a "put it on the other monitor for background noise" type of show.  So dubbed is the only way this'll work.

Also by the way Davis is a bad character.

you ever just wanna post but dunno what to post about

anyway here's some unsolicited positive anime movie opinions

Liz and the Blue Bird
There's one scene right near the start where a character is going up a flight of stairs and kinda spins their heel as they do a 180 to the next set & it makes a nice floor noise. I think about that scene a lot. I've never noticed the foley as much as i have in this film.
I read the director had briefly considered a k-on movie where yui tries to thread a needle for a couple of hours and i'd watch that also.

Penguin Highway
Fun adventure romp about the scientific method. The main kid felt like a Haruki Murakami protag. They were v positive and upbeat all through the movie & i wanted to root for them.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
Lovely movie about time and motherhood with well-executed time skips. I was impressed at the world design, you only get little glimpses of each town but they're full of atmosphere and evocative aesthetic touches.

Lu Over the Wall
The segue into the opening is wonderful. The character designs and animations are always fun and bouncy.

The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl
Sharing the set of characters with Tatami Galaxy is a cute decision, playing on the familiar character roles of familiar characters if you've watched the latter. I enjoyed that each act seemed rather distinct at first but everything slowly builds up and collides with each other.

Time of Eve
I appreciate this director's style with the cg environments and 3d camera, which come together to give the cafe a real sense of place & character. The cafe is cozy and friendly and I want to hang out there. The music when they enter the cafe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwih0whRjCQ) is extremely powerful to the point in which only fan-extended versions of it seem to exist on youtube. Probably my fave animovie??

Patema Inverted
The concept is rad and the gravity scenes give me butterflies in my stomach. Wanna make a co-op platformer where you hold hands in different gravities.

Howl's Moving Castle
My fave ghimbli movie, I adore everybody moving into the castle and becoming cool flatmates and I think it would make a v watchable sitcom. I wrote some episode synopses that are probably entertaining for only me but i can post them if anyone want's

When Marnie Was There
This is also my fave ghrumbli movie and I really resonate with Anna. The credits song makes me cry.

i know its late but i just wanna say thanks for the good post. i was gonna reply to it with something about how i dont really watch anime movies because its hard to get them without piracy but i forgot to do it. i watched some of liz and the blue bird thanks to a friend who bought it and streamed it but my connection got really bad halfway through so i missed a lot of it. the part i saw was really good so im sad i didnt see more.....

I did! Spinel is great. [sp]Was a little worried about the kinda "everyone's lost their memories, all progress is reverted" stuff but it led to some nice character moments & good tunes. Good movie.[/sp]

Looking forward to steven universe future!!
Title: Re: animes
Post by: cati on October 04, 2019, 09:52:47 PM
yeah it was good. im kinda curious if theyre gonna keep steven just being kind of a tactless dick now, like how he just ditched spinel as soon as he got what he wanted from her, immediately after hearing about how his mom did the exact same thing. and then how he palmed her off again minutes later. it seemed out of step with his character up til now, so itd be interesting if theyre intentionally writing him to have negative character development.
Title: Re: animes
Post by: dcco on October 09, 2019, 03:39:25 AM
yeha definitely wondering what direction they're gonna take steven universe in w/ respect to character development, seems interesting though.

also spinel is a good villain - both on her own and i like how her existence retroactively affects the rest of the show.
