i got there before, but i couldn't progress past the third screen because i can't jump high enough

its easy to troubleshoot when you describe any symptoms, error messages, steps to reproduce, etc

the game literally just stays open in task manager, but there are no visuals of it actually working

it sounds like what usually happens when you try to run a game maker 6 game on newer computers.... try running it through this tool https://help.yoyogames.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/205452778/GM_Convert_Game.zip

i thought the download link in the first post already has it converted though so thats probably not it.....

Yeah, same thought here.  The old "shows in task man but not on-screen" is what happens with unconverted GM6 games.  Requires conversion on Vista and later, if memory serves.
